The
Annual Conference of China Global Geoparks 2019 took place on October 10 and 11
at the Dunhuang Global Geopark in Gansu Province. In the evening of October 10
the Sanqingshan Global Geopark of Jiangxi Province Tianzhushan Global Geopark
of Anhui Province and Guangwushan-Nuoshuihe Global Geopark of Sichuan Province
engaged in an energetic discussion to vie for the right to host the Annual
Conference of China Global Geoparks 2020. Guangwushan-Nuoshuihe Global Geopark
ultimately gained unanimous approval and earned the right to host the Annual
Conference of China Global Geoparks 2020 an occasion marked by the closing
ceremony on October 11.
Since
joining the Global Geoparks Network in 2018 Guangwushan-Nuoshuihe Global
Geopark has always upheld the development concept and philosophy of the UNESCO
Global Geoparks Network continued to explore and endeavor in various aspects
such as geological resource protection exchange and communication brand
operation and promoting sustainable development in local economy and achieved
numerous preliminary accomplishments. The unanimous decision from the National
Forest and Grassland Administration of China and National Geopark of China
network to grant the right to host the Annual Conference of China Global
Geoparks 2020 to Guangwushan-Nuoshuihe Global Geopark reflects the full
approval and commendation of the geopark. If the Annual Conference of China
Global Geoparks 2020 were to achieve success in Bazhong the feat would make
history as Bazhong's first world-class accomplishment in this field and would
be monumental to promoting the "Welcome to Bazhong" geoscience
tourism brand fostering green and sustainable growth of the geopark and
propelling Bazhong's local socio-economic development.
Located
in Bazhong of Sichuan Province specifically at the heart of the Micang
Mountains the Guangwushan-Nuoshuihe Global Geopark is well-known for its
granite and karst topography and has a total area of 1818 square km
consisting of seven major geological areas namely Taoyuan Daba Eighteen
Moon-like Ponds Shenmen Nuoshui River Cave Heaven Linjiang Valley and
Kongshan Sky Basin. In 2012 the former Ministry of Land and Resources
officially green approved the founding of the Sichuan Guangwushan-Nuoshuihe
National Geopark. In 2013 the Sichuan Guangwushan-Nuoshuihe National Geopark
formally unveiled its establishment and opened its gates to the public. In August
2014 application for Global Geopark status officially commenced at the behest
of the CPC Bazhong Municipal Committee and Bazhong Municipal Government. In
December 2015 domestic evaluation for Global Geopark application was approved;
on April 17 2018 the Guangwushan-Nuoshuihe was officially inducted into the
Global Geoparks Network at the 204th session of the Executive Board of UNESCO
thereby becoming the third geopark in Sichuan Province and 36th in China to
achieve this feat. Guangwushan-Nuoshuihe Global Geopark formally opened to the
public on October 26 2018.
It
has been known that the Chinese geoparks of Jiuhuashan and Yimengshan were also
inducted into the Global Geoparks Network this year continuing the 100% rate
of successful application and bringing the total of Global Geoparks in China to
39. At present the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network has a total of 147 members
with China being the most numerously represented country.
